Jamia Milia Islamia was first established in 1920 by a group of Muslims who felt a need for a University that was free from Government interference. Aligarh Muslim University was then seen as pro-British. The founding members were Mohammad Ali Jauhar, Hakim Ajmal Khan, Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari, Abdul Majeed Khwaja, and Zakir Hussain under the presidentship of Maulana Mahmud al-Hasan. Some these members were active in Khilafat Movement—–a movement to establish Islamic caliphate in India. Founding committee included Kifayatullah Dehlawi, Hussain Ahmad Madani, Syed Sulaiman Nadwi, Abdul Haq Abdul Bari Firangi Mahali, Shabbir Ahmad Usmani, Sanaullah Amritsari, Muhammad Iqbal and Saifuddin Kitchlew many of whom moved to Pakistan after partition in 1947. Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore supported the opening of this university. University Grants Commission gave it a deemed status in 1962. On 26 December 1988 it became a central deemed university.

Increasingly, Jamia students have been involved in anti-India and anti-Hindu activities. In 2008 Delhi blast three Jamia students Zia Ur Rehman, Saquib Nisar and Mohammad Shakeel were arrested for being part of an operational arm of banned terror outfit Indian Mujahideen. They were also charged with planting bombs in Delhi, Ahmedabad, and Jaipur. In 2018 Delhi Police arrested two others and Haris Mustaq Khan alia Abu Bakar who were working for ISIS in Kashmir. Haris Khan is a graduate of Jamia Milia Islamia.
During anti-CAA protests many students have been charged with sedition and anti-India activities. Students Ladeeda Sakhaloon and Ayesha Renna call for ‘Jihad’ against India. Mahroor Parvez has called Indian army as ‘occupational force’ and Handwara soldiers who lost their lives as ‘war criminals’ and so has Shadab Najar. They support terrorists Riyak Naikoo, Burhan Wani, Afzal Guru, Yakub Memon, Ali Muslaiyar and Variam Kunnath. The latter were directly responsible for Moplah genocide of Hindus of Kerala in 1921. In March 2020, Abrar Ahmad a Assistant Professor at Jamia Milia Islamia was suspended when a social media post made by him went viral were he proudly proclaimed to have failed 15 non-muslim students because they supported CAA. He has since been suspended pending inquiry. Many students indulged in stone throwing and attacked Delhi police.
