Massey University officially came into being on 28th March 1928 originally as Massey Agriculture College. It was formed by combining Victoria University College’s Chair of Agriculture, Auckland University College’s School of Agriculture and named after former Prime Minister William Ferguson Massey.
Massey University shot to limelight when the University’s CARE (Center for Cultured Approach to Research and Evaluation) Chaired by Prof. Mohan J Dutta was one of the sponsors of Dismantling Global Hindutva (DGH) conference organised by Hinduphobic Audrey Truschke and her Hinduphobic colleagues.

The conference was held in September 2021. When Hindus in New Zealand and globally raised their concerns for sponsoring and participating in Hinduphobic conferences, Massey University’s administrators took the same oft-repeated Islamist-leftist line “Hinduism is different from Hindutva. Hindutva is a violent political ideology with Nazi and fascist roots”. Massey University’s Prof. Stephen Kelly, Pro Vice Chancellor Massey Business School, sent a pathetic, insensitive and identical cut-paste response to all Hindu groups with many parts of the letter addressing irrelevant issues. Prof. Kelly states “It is essential to note that the conference makes it absolutely clear that Hinduism is not Hindutva”.
As all are aware on Day 2 of DGH conference one of the participants Dr. Akanksha Mehta clearly states “I say all this to emphasise without hesitation that Hindutva is indeed inseparable from Hindusim”. Dr. Mehta is a lecturer in Gender, Sexuality and Culture Studies, and co-director of Center of Feminist Research at Goldsmiths, University of London.
Hindu Council of New Zealand asked Massey University to apologise for maligning Hindus and Hinduism. Massey University did not bother to reply.

In August 2020, Massey University’s CARE provided platform to Hinduphobic Professor Mohan J Dutta who authored a White Paper Series ‘Cultural Hindutva and Islamphobia‘. When Hindus raised this issue with CARE on social media, CARE’s account got locked, essentially refusing to answer Hindus on their concerns.

It is also known that Massey University has a massive tie-up with Chinese universities, despite calls by human rights activists to severe ties with China for their on-going persecution against Uighyur in Xinjiang province, China. Massey University also runs a ‘China Scholarship Council‘, PhD programme open only for Chinese students. Below is the list of Chinese Universities that has Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Massey University.

Following the recent spike in Hinduphobia in Massey University, Hindu Youth New Zealand, gave a press release on 10th September 2021, stating Hindu students are unsafe in Massey University campuses. Hindu Youth New Zealand President Murali Krishna Magesan, said “The last thing Hindu Youth New Zealand wants to be doing is trying to inform more than 150,000 Hindus in New Zealand that Massey University endorses Hinduphobia and Hindumisia and Hindu students should look to alternative institutes of higher education where they will not be marginalised and can feel safe”.

Massey University’s CARE is a summit partner for a three day anti-India, anti-Hindu event from 26th-28th February 2022 titles “India on the Brink:Preventing Genocide”. CARE’s Mohan Dutta is slated to speak during the event.
