Jonathan AC Brown is Associate Professor and Alwaleed bin Talal Chair of Islamic Civilization in the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. He was raised as a Christian and converted to Islam in 1997. He belongs to the Hanbali School of Sunni Islam. He is faculty at the Fairfax Institute whose parent institute is International Institute of Islamic Thought. He is Hinduphobic, anti-Semitic and an anti-Ahmedi calling one Ahmedi “low-life”.
Jonathan Brown is son-in-law of Sami Al-Arian, a former University of South Florida professor who in 2006 pleaded guilty for conspiracy to provide services to Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) a proscribed terrorist group. Sami Al Arain was member of PIJ’s shura council and financier at the same time as a Professor at University of South Florida. he continued as member of PIJ even after it was designated as a terror organisation. Sami Al Arian was a former member of Muslim Brotherhood. Jonathan Brown’s wife, daughter of Sami Al Arian, Laila Al Arian is a journalist working for Qatar funded, Muslim Brotherhood mouthpiece, Al Jazeera. His Facebook profile picture carried a Muslim Brotherhood symbol. He is also seen on many panels on the separatism of Kashmir from India.
According to Jonathan AC Brown he converted to Islam when he was 19 or 20 years.
In 2017, Jonathan Brown at a talk at International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) on “Islam and the Problem of Slavery”, spoke in support of slavery and rape. He said “I don’t think it’s morally evil to own somebody,” and “most of human history, human beings have not thought of consent as the essential feature of morally correct sexual activity.” He is known to have said that Shariah understanding of slavery is different to the American chattel slavery. He was called by out by several scholars. International Institute of Islamic Thought is a Muslim Brotherhood think thank.
He later issued an apology.
Jonathan Brown often complains about Hindutva, from blaming Hindus for 2021 Leicester violence to blaming Hindus for genocide of Muslims in India.
While speaking on “South Asia in Islamic Thought”, Jonathan Brown says he is not particularly interested in pre-Islamic India and only interested in South Asia as part of the Islamic world. Elaborating further on how Islam entered the Indian sub-continent, Brown says Muslims first came into India as traders, then warriors, then conquerors and subsequently became the Kings who blended with the local indigenous population creating a composite culture.

Jonathan Brown points out that the Mughal kings were foreign Muslims ruling in India just like Indian rulers who were doing the same a thousand years before them. He draws comparison between the murderous Aurangzeb and Tipu Sultan who invited kings from Afghanistan to invade India for Jihad with Hindu kings like Chandragupta Maurya, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the Cholas, Pandavas, Ahoms etc.
Talking on the genetic make up of Mughal kings, Jonathan Brown says after the Mughal rule of Akbar it was the rule of Rajputs as Shah Jahan, Aurangzeb were genetically half to three fourths Rajputs. He further says Mughal kings created a composite or artistic style composite political style who later thad to face ignominy by living as subjects under the British rule.
Talking about the intellectuals that the Indian Islam produced he sings praises of Shah Waliullah Dehalwi. He further says intellectual activity blossomed after the Mughal state around 1500’s despite Taimurlane “comes and causes political chaos and its very traumatic in terms of the number of lives lost, the 1400s in India is actually a time of incredible cultural and intellectual fluorescence”. He further said “…aftermath of Tamerlane’s time…its a time of incredible productivity and growth….”. To note here, Jonathan Brown downplays and completely whitewashes the forcible conversion, slaughter of Hindus and rape and abduction of Hindu women. British historians Henry Elliot and John Dowson in 1869 note in their book “The history of India : as told by its own historians. The Muhammadan period” how Mughal kings wiped out village after village forcing Hindus to convert or die.
When asked about why Mughal kings are vilified in India, Jonathan Brown says “the British in order to justify their presence portrayed Indian history basically as ancient India was a land of wisdom ..sanskritic wisdom and then the dark ages of the Muslim rule and we British are here to return you to enlightenment”. Brown just stops short of saying India’s pre-Islamic history is a myth invented by the British, a sentiment echoed by IIT Professor of Philosophy, Divya Dwivedi. Divya Dwivedi during India hosting G20 meeting said “future is egalitarian India without Hinduism“.
Explaining the contributions of Mughals to India and Indian culture, Joanthan Brown giving an example of Aurangzeb says he is often vilified in present day India. Aurangzeb is made out to be “one of these horrible Muslim rulers who destroyed temples and treated Hindus badly that’s not the accurate understanding of Aurangzeb ..Aurangzeb is an Indian ruler he is Indian..he destroyed some temples but built some temples. Muslim rulers and Indian rulers during history destroying temples or supporting them were political or political actions.”. He encouraged listeners to read Audrey Truschke‘s book on Aurangzeb. Interesting to note, here liberal-leftist American propaganda newspaper, The New York Times, shows Aurangzeb as a despot who killed 4.6 million Indians.
Elaborating on Hindus rising in resistance against the Mughals, Jonathan Brown says “Marathas started to rebel agains the Mughals Aurangzeb”. He further opines that “imposing jaziya in Hindus was a bad decision not out of irrational fanaticism” while denying India as one nation that had boundaries and borders.
Joanthan Brown calls Hindus speaking against Mughal rule as “intolerant” and “backward”, says “its shocking …I cant believe some of the stuff I read by Indian scholars like Hindu Indian scholars on Islamic history of middle ages of India..the stuff they write..if I wrote that about anybody I would be fired….it would be so horrifically intolerant the way they talk like some things like its not conceivable that anybody would convert to Islam out of free will….who is intolerant here……that way of telling history is backward I would never accept it”. He also says “Bengal and Punjab were in the realm of Hindu Brahmanic traditions” hence the conversions there were more compared to rest of the country.
Apart for his apparent hatred against Hindus, Jonathan Brown is also an anti-semite supporting proscribed terrorist groups, Hamas’s attack on innocent Jewish men women and children on 7th October 2023.
Writing on Sati, Jonathan Brown spreads misinformation that sati was a Hindu custom. As he notes in his own the practice increased post 1500’s, it was a time when Islamic invaders took Hindu women (kafirs) as war booty and sex slaves.
