Irfan Nooruddin is the Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani Professor of Indian politics in Georgetown University. As per Georgetown University website he was also the director of Georgetown University India Initiative from 2015 to 2020. Irfan Nooruddin was a non resident senior fellow with the Atlantic Council’s South Asia Center and, previously, the Center’s senior director and member of Lokniti: Programme in Comparative Democracy in New Delhi, India.
Irfan Nooruddin is also associated with extremely Hinduphobic, left-leaning Hindus for Human Rights which too has been teaming up Jamat-e-Islami’s Indian American Muslims Council to designate India as a “Country of Particular Concern”. Hindus for Human Rights denies existence of hatred against Hindus and has been petitioning that use of the word Hinduphobia should be construed as “Nazi-hate speech conduct”.
During the elections, India’s main opposition party used a dubious report authored by Irfan Nooruddin, Subir Sinha and Ritumbra Manuvie. The report claimed that India’s rise on the world stage under the leadership of PM Modi was ‘a mirage’. The report was produced by a dubious NGO Friends of Democracy founded by billionaire George Soros’s son Jonathan Soros.
In 2024, in an interview to left-leaning France 24, Irfan Nooruddin while speaking on Indian PM Modi said “He has often and very successfully used anti-Muslim hate speech as a way of stoking his base. The party that he represents, the Bharatiya Janata Party, or the BJP, very proudly proclaims itself as a party of Hindu nationalism. They are outspoken in their demand and their desire, in their ambition to recreate India as a Hindu state, [to] abandon its traditional secular credentials that were part of the Indian constitution at independence in 1947.” He further goes on lie to the international audience that “…the BJP proudly proclaims as a party of Hindu nationalism, they are outspoken in their demand and in their desire and their ambition to create India, re-create India as a Hindu state abandoning its secular credentials that were part of the Indian Constitution at the time of independence in 1947.” India’s Constitution came into effect in 1947 and not 1950. The word secular was not part of the original constitution but was inserted much later in 1975 by the then Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi after the imposition of Emergency and while the entire opposition was in jail.
While speaking to CNN about India’s elections, Irfan Nooruddin complains that “The BJP understands that its path to a majority in parliament – especially a super-majority that would allow it to amend the constitution – is to consolidate the Hindu vote and to prevent the opposition from making inroads through economic appeals,”.
Irfan Nooruddin often fear mongers of non-existent Hindu majoritarianism to Western media. In a 2024 interview to America’s PBS he says “There has been a rising majoritarianism within the Indian population that has now really been manifested by the BJP, the ruling party.” He further goes on to say “…..200 million Muslims and another 50 million religious minorities are worried that at any given moment they might be attacked without any protection of the state machinery of law and order, the judicial system is one in which those citizens become second class citizens in their own country.”
While speaking to French state broadcaster France 24 on the consecration of Shri Ram’s temple at Ayodhya, Irfan Nooruddin called it a “sad day” as India’s experiment in secularism failed. Speaking on the demolition of Babri masjid that stood on the remains of a former Ram temple, Nooruddin fails to mention that India’s Supreme Court had acknowledged in its 1000 page report at the existence of a 12th century temple. He further goes on to say that the consecration of the temple is to make India a Hindu nation not just by the majority of the population but the essence of its politics and its law-making.
Irfan Nooruddin further goes on to lie that the Gujarat state machinery was standing at the sidelines during Godhra riots in 2002 while PM Modi was the the Chief Minister. India’s Supreme Court exonerated Modi in all the cases of 2002 and even went on to say that many petitions were found to be “motivated and prompted by directions from “some others””.
In 2023, Irfan Nooruddin testified at USCIRF’s hearing in India’s human rights been campaigning with Jamat-e-Islami’s Indian American Muslim Council and USCIRF to designate India as a “Country for Particular Concern”.
In 2023 writing for Project Syndicate “The Truth About “India’s Moment”“, Irfan Nooruddin repeats the same talking points of the Western liberals and Islamists, calling India a majoritarian country with back-sliding democracy “Such majoritarian impunity is risky business in a country with a long, sordid history of deadly riots and pogroms.” No where does he mention how Hindus have been genocided in Kashmir, post-electoral violence in West Bengal, and love jihad against Hindu girls. At the end if the article Irfan Nooruddin requests the West to re-think their support to India, What risks does its democratic backsliding pose to America’s credibility and broader China-containment strategy? How does India understand its responsibilities within the liberal international order?”
In a 2023 while talking to German state broadcaster DW news, Irfan Nooruddin continues to lie about India’s “back-sliding” of democracy, opines India is not a democracy it once was and not as strong as it once was.
In his 2019 article, Repeal of Article 370: Implications for India, Pakistan, and the United States co-authored by Kyra Kocis, Nidhi Upadhyaya, Irfan Nooruddin for The Atlantic Council on revocation of Articles 370 and 35A by Government of India in Kashmir, the article says “The articles have institutionalized a unique constitutional relationship between Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) and the Central Government since 1954. Article 35A authorized the J&K legislature to determine residency requirements and restrict property rights.” Both Articles prevented Hindus of Kashmir to buy land and de barred them from the state following their genocide in 1990. The articles also prevented low-caste Hindus of the state from gaining residency and avail central government benefits. The article further states “Chinese interest in the region centers around Ladakh, where India claims parts of Chinese administered Aksai Chin.” Aksai Chin is Indian territory illegally occupied by China. The article also called for increased interference of the United States in the Indian sub-continent and also interference into the Kashmir issue which India has always claimed to be a bilateral issue.
Irfan Nooruddin doesn’t have any known social media accounts.
