Dr.Jason Stanley is Jacob Urowsky Professor of Philosophy at Yale University. Before joining Yale, Dr.Stanley was a Professor at Rutgers University, University of Michigan, and Cornell University. He is the author of ‘How Fascism Works:The Politics of Us and them’ and ‘How Propaganda Works’. According to Jason Stanley any non-left, non-liberal government in any country is fascist. Currently he classifies Hungary, Poland, Italy, India, Israel, Russia, Turkey as fascist while United States and Brazil were fascist but not anymore.
Explaining what fascism is, Jason Stanley gives a tutorial on the Big Think You Tube Channel where he says “fascism is right-wing by nature. It is based in ultra-nationalism.” He gives 10 points of fascism: 1.The Mythic Past 2. Propaganda 3.Anti-Intellectualism 4.Unreality 5.Hierarchy 6.Victimhood 7. Law and Order 8. Sexual Anxiety 9.Sodom and Gomorrah (Rural Urban divide) 10.Arbeit Macht Frei (work shall make you free). Western media, academia and regimes classify India’s non-left, non-liberal political parties as “Far-right Hindu supremacists“. Like The New Yorker, The MIT Press Reader, The Guardian, The History News Network, VOA News, Foreign Affairs, Al Jazeera, The Conversation, New York Times, Germany‘s DW, The Diplomat, Huffpost, Foreign Policy, NBC News, Reuters, NPR, The Nation, CNN, Washington Post Australia’s The Saturday Paper, Canada’s CBC, The Intercept, Cambridge University, The University of Edinburgh, Princeton to name a few.
In 2021 while talking to Joe Rosenthal of Carnegie Council on fascism, he says “….with India it is clear anti-Muslim cultural nationalism, Hindu nationalism harkens back to RSS, an actual fascist organisation to make a pure Hindu India……”
In 2022, Genocide Watch’s Dr. Gregory Stanton organised India Genocide Summit a three day event where Janson Stanley was one of the speakers. Speaking on the panel with Angana Chatterjee, Ayushman Kaul and Ben Grazda. In his introductory comments Jason Stanley says “India as a country worries me as a structure of classical fascism….. Straightforward causal link between Nazism and RSS…. Hindutva ideology tells us that there was a mythic past a 1000 yrs ago, 1200 yrs ago where India was supposedly ethnically pure.” He calls Hindus in India and Whites in America as ‘dominant groups’.
In the below video, Jason Stanley attacks Hindu men where he says “the nation has been humiliated, liberal tolerance is feminine weakness, it allows the enemy to somehow borrow in the society and corrupt your women. So the idea that your manhood is being challenged and you need a violent response to it. This is the core to fascist mobilisation”. He goes on to say “….dominant group victimhood proves to be incredibly violent….dominant group victimhood is kind of no mercy, no empathy perhaps because they haven’t been really victimised”.
Jason Stanley further says India’s pre-genocide is a rip-off from the West. “How much they are ripping off from the White Westerners. They ripping off national socialism from the West and ripping off lynchings from my country, the United States…….What the Hindus are doing…..not Hindus, Hindutva, Hindu nationalists are doing is that they are colonising India, they are colonialists. They are brining in Western imperialists white concepts and tactics in their justification of this repression, stripping citizenship and mass violence agains their fellow Indians.”
Speaking on the analogy between Hindutva and Whiteness, Jason Stanley says “RSS, Hindutva movement explicitly borrows tactics of Whiteness from the West…these tactics and strategies are from the White people in the West….”. Speaking on collapse of democracy in India he says “What’s happening to Rana Ayyub right now in India is a five alarm fire for freedom and democracy.” Speaking further on Rana Ayyub he says major, famous, critical journalists should not be attacked by the government by filing lawsuits in every dimension against them. Hence India is not democracy. Remember, Rana Ayyub is accused of money laundering funds collected during her Covid fund raising. According to India’s Enforcement Directorate she has also violated Foreign Contribution Regulations Act (FCRA) by receiving money in foreign currency without requisite government permission.
Speaking on National Register of Citizens in Assam, Jason Stanley says “Assam is deliberately the staging ground for what’s supposed to go national they are practising there.” He further says “Hindutva is structuring Hindu identity as whiteness”.
Participating in Jamat-e-Islami’s Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC) on 2002 Gujarat riots, Jason Stanley draws on his Jewish ancestry, draws parallels between Hindutva and Nazisim and says what Muslims in India are facing in India is similar to the genocides of the past.
The entire discussion can be viewed at IAMC’s You Tube Channel. Here Jason Stanely repeats that India’s past is “purely mythical” and totally imagined.
In 2020 while speaking to Economic Times, Jason Stanley said Trump’s America and Modi’s India are both fascist, ethno-nationalist governments, where democracy is under threat and minorities are mistreated. He says “India is a classic illiberal democracy that is not respecting minority rights.”
In 2020, writing for ThePhilosopher1923 on “The Philosophy of Fascism“, Jason Stanley writes that governments of Hungary, Poland, Russia, India, Israel, Brazil, Italy and the United States under Trump are all are authoritarian, majoritarian, and fascist. He writes “the nationalism we see in Hungary and in India and in the United States is a nationalism of majority groups, whose feeling of victimization is not based in a comparable history of actual victimization and marginalization.” Giving the example of India, Jason Stanley writes “In the Hindutva Movement, in Trump’s rhetoric, and in Orban’s speeches we see allegiance to the form of nationalism that includes only members of the traditionally dominant group. …..According to the ideology, liberalism has led to a loss of status for a once great dominant group, which is now at risk of cultural and physical annihilation by members of groups that traditionally received less respect. The concept we are looking for is fascism.”
Writing for The Guardian “For Trump and Modi, ethnic purity is the purpose of power“, Jason Stanley writes “The Bharatiya Janata party, the political wing of RSS and now India’s ruling party, has begun to implement changes in citizenship laws that echo the Nuremberg Laws.” He further mislead readers when he writes “India’s new Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) allows for a fast-track to citizenship for non-Muslim migrants, thereby discriminating against Muslims”. Government of India made it clear that the Citizenship Amendment Act fast-tracks citizenship for Hindus, Buddhists, Christians, Sikhs, Parsis and Jains who entered India on or before the 31st day of December, 2014 and who are persecuted in neighbouring Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh. It has no connection to Indian Muslims or affects their current Indian citizenship. Eminent lawyer Harish Salve writes for the Times of India justifying the CAA “If the law was broader and allowed members of all religious communities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan to migrate into India, we could as well do away with our borders.” Salve further writes “The loudest criticism relates to the supposed intention of the government to throw all Muslims out of India. There is no law, rule or notification published – or even a draft circulated – that would suggest that the government has any such intent.”
In the same piece on the topic of National Register of Citizens (NRC), Jason Stanley writes “The proposed national register requires residents to prove their citizenship with documentation – which many in India lack. Together, these laws place Muslims without documentation in a quandary.” Interesting to note here, Indian government in 2016 said on the floor of India’s Parliament said that 2 crore illegal Bangladeshis are living in India. The government further said it’s not possible to get an exact figure as most enter India without valid travel documents and skip formal registration process. India has also toughened its stand on estimated 40,000 illegal Rohingyas living in India. It is well known Rohingyas are a internal security threat for India.
Calling India a fascist nation similar to Nazi Germany, Jason Stanley writes “There is more to fascism than changing citizenship laws. Fascist movements seek one-party rule: over the courts, the police, the military and the press. They involve a cult of loyalty to a single leader and nostalgia for a mythic past when the nation was dominated by the privileged group. But the core of fascist ideology is realised in changing citizenship laws to privilege a single ethnic group. This is why we regard the Nuremberg Laws as a defining moment in German history, and the concentration camp as the defining Nazi institution.” He calls India’s glorious past of 10,000 year history “mythical”.
In 2022 Jason Stanley had ‘polite‘ dinners with Nazis which caused an outrage. He also compared feminists to Hindutva.
India’s left politcal party, CPIML (Communist Party of India Marxist Liberation) reviewed Jason Stanley‘s book ‘How Fascism Works’. In the book Jason Stanley wrote “According to adherents of the Hindutva movement in India, Hindus were the indigenous population of India, living according to patriarchal customs and with strict puritanical sexual practices until the arrival of Muslims, and subsequently, Christians, who introduced decadent Western values. The Hindutva movement has fabricated a version of a mythic Indian past with a pure nation of Hindus, to dramatically supplement what is regarded by scholars as the actual history of India.”
While talking on the the difference between democratic vs fascist education, Jason Stanley says “…In fascist education by contrast you focus only on the dominant perspective. The purpose of focusing on the dominant perspective is to glorify the achievements of the nation and the traditions of the dominant race though in some countries it can also be the dominant religion India right now with certain Hindu nationalists.” He further says “fascist education the function is to promote job skills”
Talking on democracy Jason Stanley says in fascist politicians or those veering towards fascism vilify others on their ethnic or religious or cultural or racial background or heritage’s.
